Vol. 363 No. 4

Written Answers. - Motor Cycle Insurance.

46.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the action he proposes to take to curb the escalating cost of motor cycle insurance, in view of the fact that many young people use this mode of transport to travel to work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As with other types of insurance cover, increases in premium rates for motor cycle insurance reflect the continuing and substantial level of losses incurred by insurers providing this particular insurance. The Deputy will also realise that the accident rates for motor cycles are much higher than for cars and this has a bearing on the cost of such cover. These factors are outside my direct and immediate control. Motor cyclists themselves can of course help by safer driving and reducing the claims giving rise to these costs.
