Vol. 363 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mayo Commonage.

86.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will make a final decision on the position regarding a commonage division (details supplied) in County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On ecological and environmental grounds Dooaghtry Commonage (otherwise known as Tallabaun Commonage) is regarded by the Forest and Wildlife Service of my Department as a site of important scientific value.

My Department has informed the Department of Agriculture accordingly and, while not objecting to the proposed division of the commonage, has suggested that, in the consideration of any future applications by the owners for assistance in the development or reclamation of the lands in question, regard should be had to their scientific values and the need to avoid or minimise any injurious effect on those values. Further discussions will take place between the two Departments on this aspect of the matter.
