Vol. 363 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Risks to Garda Síochána.

8.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to an article (details supplied) which indicates extreme concern on the part of gardaí in the Bridewell Prison Remand Section, concerning the possibility of members being exposed to the disease, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, and the virulent Hepatitis B as a result of having to handle prisoners with a high risk of carrying these infectious diseases; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): I have seen the article referred to in the question. Measures to deal with any health risks to members of the Garda Síochána arising in the course of their official duties are matters for the Garda authorities. I am informed by the authorities that special measures have been taken to protect members of the Garda Síochána, including members stationed at the Bridewell in Dublin, who may come in contact with AIDS or Hepatitis B and that the Garda surgeon is monitoring the situation.
