Vol. 363 No. 7

Written Answers. - Unfair Dismissals Act.

16.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will consider amending the Unfair Dismissals Act so the refusal to handle South African goods could not be used as grounds for dismissal from employment.

The issue of conscientious objection to the handling of specific products has been highlighted in the dispute at Dunnes Stores. I am not convinced that the particular industrial relations problems arising in this dispute or generally should be tackled through legislation on the lines mentioned by the Deputy while the possibility exists of establishing more flexible agreed procedures to cover such matters. My view is that an agreed code of practice on the issue would be the best approach.
