Vol. 363 No. 7

Written Answers. - Appointment of Worker Directors.

20.

asked the Minister for Labour if it is intended to extend the Worker Participation (State Enterprises) Act, 1977, to any other semi-State companies or bodies; the companies or bodies to which it will be extended; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I will be extending the provisions of the Act to six further State enterprises so as to allow worker directors to be appointed to the boards of these enterprises. The enterprises are: Aer Rianta, Bord Gáis Éireann, Foras Forbartha, National Rehabilitation Board, Irish Steel and the Voluntary Health Insurance Board.

I am committed to the principle of worker participation not alone at board level but also at levels below the board. As a result the amending legislation will also provide for the establishment of subboard participative arrangements in a broad range of State enterprises on the request of a majority of employees.
