Vol. 363 No. 11

Written Answers. - Finglas (Dublin) Environmental Improvements.

18.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make special funds available for a scheme of environmental improvements in the Finglas south low cost housing scheme, which is in urgent need of upgrading, and if he will meet, at an early date, representatives of residents to discuss the needs of the area.

The initiative for tackling improvements in a particular housing estate rests with the responsible housing authority, in this case Dublin Corporation. It would, therefore, be more appropriate for the residents of the area in question to put any proposals which they may have for improving their environment directly to the corporation. If proposals relating to the improvement of the Finglas south housing estate are made to me by the corporation, I will, of course, consider them fully.

The Deputy will be aware of the Government's decision to make £5 million available in 1986 for a new programme of improved community and leisure facilities and other general amenities, particularly in areas of social need. I am considering proposals from Dublin Corporation and other bodies concerning the funding of projects under this scheme and hope to be in a position to make an announcement shortly in the matter.
