Vol. 363 No. 11

Written Answers. - Custom Clearance Facilities.

76.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the changes in Customs clearance facilities at Northern Ireland Customs posts; and the steps he has taken to protect industries that use these facilities.

I am assuming that the Deputy is referring to the exportation of refrigerated goods from County Donegal, across the land frontier, in respect of which he has made representations to my Department.

I am not aware that any changes of the kind referred to have been brought about recently, but I have requested the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Revenue Commissioners to take the matter up with the appropriate authorities in Northern Ireland.

I understand, from preliminary inquiries made by the Revenue Commissioners, that changes in the present customs clearance arrangements are being considered by the customs administration in Northern Ireland but that, in the event of any changes, that administration is prepared to facilitate regular traders in perishable goods where actual customs attendance is not provided outside the ordinary hours of Customs business.
