asked the Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Tourism the number of fishing boats repossessed or surrendered in 1985 and 1986 to date; the areas where these boats had been fishing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose to have it circulated in the Official Report. Repossession is resorted to only after every opportunity and facility, including on occasions the restructuring of accounts, have been afforded to the borrower. Ultimately, however, An Bord Iascaigh Mhara has no option but to repossess vessels with accounts in serious arrears if funds are to be available to meet commitments to the Exchequer and to the banks and to provide for the purchase of fishing vessels by new owners.
