asked the Minister for Finance if he will disaggregate the figures given under Table C 5 of the latest Central Bank report in respect of South Africa to give the total assets and liabilities of Irish Banks in South Africa in respect of 1983, 1984 and 1985; if he will give the figure in respect of each bank: and if the Government approve of such dealing.

The Central Bank bulletin is the responsibility of the Central Bank and I have no function in the matter. However, I have inquired from the Central Bank and the following are the assets and liabilities of all licensed banks vis-à-vis South Africa for 1983, 1984 and 1985 as presented in Table C5 of the Central Bank's quarterly bulletin:

The Central Bank is precluded from disclosing information on the business of any individual bank under the provisions of the Central Bank Act, 1942. Section 31. Government policy is not to encourage trade with South Africa and no assistance is provided to companies wishing to do business there.
