Vol. 364 No. 1

Written Answers. - Units for the Mentally Handicapped.

16.

(Dublin North-West) asked the Minister for Health if he is concerned at the number of buildings for mentally handicapped which are not in use because of insufficient funding in all health board areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am concerned that there are some units available which have not yet been opened. I am sure the Deputy will be pleased to know, however, that despite the heavy demand on funds generally in the health services I have made provision this year for the opening of two of these units. As I have already announced, I have asked the Western Health Board for their proposals to open the major mental handicap centre in Swinford. In Dublin, I have provided for the opening of the Belcamp unit for day care by St. Michael's House. Both of these units will, of necessity, open on a phased basis. I will continue to make special efforts to open further units within the present financial constraints.
