Vol. 364 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dance Hall Noise Levels.

104.

asked the Minister for Health if any research has been carried out on the level of noise in dance halls; if he is satisfied that it is not injurious to health; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of any research that has been carried out in this country on the levels of noise in dance halls. However a report on research carried out in the UK in 1985 by the Institute of Hearing Research reported that loud music in discos or at rock concerts is unlikely to affect the listeners' hearing except in extreme cases. It is the general view that patrons of dance halls and discotheques, because of the relatively short and infrequent length of their exposure to loud mucic, are not in any great danger.
