Vol. 364 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Eligibility.

11.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the exact basis on which it was decided that a person (details supplied) in County Monaghan was unavailable for work.

Entitlement to unemployment benefit is subject to the condition that a claimant must be available for employment. When the person concerned claimed unemployment benefit from 25 November 1985 she did not produce any evidence of having sought employment and her claim was, accordingly, disallowed on the grounds that she was not available for employment. She appealed against the disallowance and attended an oral appeal hearing on 12 February 1986 where she had an opportunity to present her case. The appeals officer on the basis of the evidence available to him also decided that the person concerned was not available for employment. She continues to sign the unemployed register and further inquiries are being made at present to establish her availability for employment from the date following the appeals officer's decision. When these inquiries are completed her entitlement to unemployment benefit from 13 February 1986 will be determined.
