Vol. 364 No. 3

Written Answers. - Manufacture of Pesticides.

20.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is satisfied with the existing safeguards and control on the use and manufacture of pesticides; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Community legislation provides controls on the use of pesticides. These controls cover maximum permissible residue levels in and on fruit and vegetables and prohibit the sale or use of certain specified pesticides which may involve risks for persons or the environment. Recent regulations under Community legislation provide that the classification, packaging and labelling of approved pesticides being marketed must indicate the risks involved and give suitable safety advice.

In addition to these safeguards and controls further measures are being considered here. These include a registration and licensing scheme which would make provision for the licensing of person selling, using and applying pesticides.

Safety controls in relation to the manufacture of pesticides are a matter for the Minister for Labour.
