Vol. 364 No. 3

Written Answers. - Subdivision of Commonages.

22.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the reasons for the long delays in having commonages throughout the country subdivided and allocated; the number of commonages awaiting division; the number under active negotiation at the moment; (a) in the country and (b) in County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The initiative in commonage division rests primarily with the shareholders. Where shareholders so request technical assistance is provided by the Land Commission inspectorate. Over the last two years about 240 such requests have been made (including 41 in County Galway). Some assistance has been provided in the majority of these cases and in 120 of them (including 25 in County Galway) division has been completed. The remaining cases will be dealt with as quickly as possible, having regard to the reduced strength of the field staff following the assignment of a number of them to the farm classification office.
