Vol. 364 No. 4

Written Answers. - Income Tax Relief.

74.

Mr. Cowen

asked the Minister for Finance when a person (details supplied) in County Offaly will receive payment in respect of mortgage relief paid to him yearly as a result of buying out his local authority house in County Offaly.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer submitted a claim to the inspector of taxes on 22 January 1985 for tax relief in respect of loan interest paid in 1984-85. An amended certificate of tax-free allowances for 1984-85, incorporating the appropriate interest relief, was issued to him in February 1985. The tax overdeducted from his earnings since the previous 6 April was refundable by his employer on the operation of this certificate. A review of his liability for the year 1984-85, which has recently been completed, revealed that the correct amount of tax was deducted from his earnings in that year. The taxpayer has been granted interest relief of £574 in his certificate of tax-free allowances for the current year, 1985-86.
