Vol. 364 No. 11

Written Answers. - Equestrian Insurance Cover.

32.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the difficulty being experienced by the Irish half-bred horse industry and horse riding schools generally in getting suitable insurance cover for their operation; if he recognises the impact this has on the agriculture sector and the tourist industry; if he will seek to have insurance provided for such riding schools at reasonable cost; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): I am aware that some equestrian related enterprises, including the Irish half-bred horse industry and horse riding schools, have been experiencing difficulties with insurance cover. While my Department cannot act as an insurance broker they have endeavoured, with a certain degree of success, to resolve the problems of insurance cover faced by these bodies. The Deputy is aware, however, that I cannot compel insurance companies to cover a particular risk or to charge a particular premium. If there are further riding schools or equestrian enterprises which cannot obtain insurance cover, they can contact the insurance section of my Department and the personnel there will endeavour to assist in finding a solution in each case.
