Vol. 364 No. 11

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

33.

asked the Minister for the Environment if an applicant for a house improvement grant (details supplied) in County Galway will receive a grant for windows, doors, bathroom, a chimney and a back kitchen; the total amount of grant to be sanctioned; the total estimate involved and when a decision will be made to sanction the grant.

Grants totalling £1,864, based on an estimate of £2,897, were approved on 1 February 1986 in respect of the installation of sewerage and bathroom facilities, the carrying out of necessary repairs, including chimney repairs, and the replacement of windows. A grant cannot be allowed for the building of a kitchen because, contrary to a condition of eligibility, the work was commenced before an inspection of the house was carried out.

34.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether it is essential for current applicants for new house grants to have their houses built by a registered builder.

As indicated by the then Minister for Finance in his Budget Statement arrangements are being introduced to require that the tax numbers of contractors who are building houses which are the subject of grant applications be furnished to the Department. I expect to be in a position to make an announcement in this matter in the near future.
