Vol. 364 No. 11

Written Answers. - Galway Public Playing Fields.

39.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the serious shortage of playing field facilities in Galway city; if he accepts that while the recent allocation of £100,000 to Galway Corporation is welcome, it is totally inadequate; and if he will give details of submissions made by Galway Corporation for additional finance for playing field facilities in the past two years.

The provision of public playing facilities in Galway city is a matter for Galway Corporation.

In May, 1985, Galway Corporation proposed to finance development of a recreational area in the Newcastle-Rahoon-Corrib Park district from housing capital but it was not possible to approve this. However, the project will be assisted this year by a grant of £100,000 under the new amenities scheme. This grant, together with local funds, should be sufficient to complete the works proposed by the Corporation for assistance under the scheme.

Apart from the Newcastle-RahoonCorrib Park project, no further submissions regarding the financing of specific projects of this nature have been made to my Department by the corporation.
