asked the Minister for Health the future proposals he has for a hospital (details supplied) in County Cavan when the new hospital is opened in 1987; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 178 and 179 together. The two hospitals in Cavan — the surgical in Cavan town and the medical-maternity at Lisdarn — will cease to provide acute general hospital services when the new hospital at Cavan is opened.
A recent report by the North Eastern Health Board on Medical Care for the Aged indicated that St. Phelim's Hospital, Cavan should be replaced as a long stay nursing institution and recommended that this be achieved, in part, by using the existing Lisadarn Hospital as an extended nursing care unit. This recommendation will have to be considered in the context of many other recommendations made in the report.
