asked the Minister for Justice the total number of prison officers in (a) Portlaoise and (b) Limerick prisons, for each of the years 1983, 1984 and 1985; and the total number of prison officers who are exclusively concerned with the charge of prisoners on political subversion charges for each of these years.

The number of prison staff employed in Portlaoise prison and Limerick prison on 1 January in the years 1983, 1984 and 1985 was as follows:

It is not the practice for security reasons to release details of the number of prison staff responsible for particular classes of prisoners in those prisons.
