asked the Taoiseach the contribution in percentage terms of tourism in Ireland to GNP in 1985; and its contribution to the GNP of each of our partner countries in the EC.

The following table gives estimates for 1984, the latest year for which data are available. Tourism receipts include receipts by national carriers from passenger fares by visitors to the country.

asked the Taoiseach the percentage of total foreign exchange earnings generated by the tourism industry in the years 1980 to 1985, inclusive.

Estimates are available for the years 1980 to 1984 and for the nine months to September 1985. The following are the percentages requested:

Expenditure in Ireland by visitors from abroad (including international passenger fare receipts) as a percentage of total current credit items in the Balance of International Payments—1980, 6.4 per cent; 1981, 6.2 per cent; 1982, 6.1 per cent; 1983, 5.7 per cent; 1984, 5.2 per cent; January-September 1984, 6.1 per cent; January-September 1985, 6.0 per cent.
