(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Agriculture in regard to the Registration of Potato Growers and Potato Packers Act, 1984, if he will indicate: (a) the number of growers and packers who have been registered; and (b) the number of growers and packers estimated to have been engaged in these activities prior to the coming into force of the legislation.

A total of 850 growers and packers have registered to date. Information as to the number of potato packers or the number of growers who also packed potatoes prior to the legislation is not available. The number of farmers growing in excess of one hectare of potatoes is estimated to be in the region of 5,000.
