Vol. 365 No. 9

Written Answers. - Social Employment Scheme.

19.

asked the Minister for Labour if, in view of the number of under 25 year olds interested in work under the social employment scheme, he will increase the number of under 25s employed from 10 per cent of the workforce.

The social employment scheme was developed specifically to enable the large numbers of persons over 25 who have been unemployed for an extended period to make a worth-while contribution to the social development of their community.

The Deputy will be aware that persons under 25 years of age are catered for by the wide range of other training and employment schemes operated by my Department, the National Manpower Service, AnCO, the Youth Employment Agency and CERT.

The employment of under 25s on SES projects is allowable in certain isolated instances. This arrangement is in operation to facilitate sponsors who are employing large numbers of participants in areas where the available workforce may fall slightly below the proposed SES take-on target.
