Vol. 365 No. 10

Written Answers. - Killarney National Park.

78.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will enter into discussions with the Office of Public Works, Kerry County Council and Killarney UDC with a view to the provision of man-made beaches around the Lakes of Killarney; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Lakes of Killarney form part of Killarney National Park. The major objective in designating an area as a national park is to preserve it from material interference by man. It would not be in keeping with recognised international criteria for the management of national parks if the Commissioners were to allow the development of man-made beaches on the lakes. An official of the Office of Public Works has explained the policy to members of Killarney UDC.
