Vol. 366 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballycotton (Cork) Coastal Protection.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance the proposals he has for the protection of the coast around Ballycotton; if he is aware of the very serious coastal erosion in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that erosion is taking place at Ballycotton, County Cork. Preliminary examinations of the two proposals received from Cork County Council for coast protection schemes at Ballycotton have been completed. The reports on the examinations are jointly under consideration by the Commissioners of Public Works with a view to making determinations, under section 4 (1) of the Coast Protection Act, 1963, as to whether the circumstances are such that the preparation and execution of a scheme is feasible.

Does the Minister appreciate this matter has been a bone of contention for many years and that it affects the only road into Ballycotton? Will she not agree that it demands urgent attention?

Erosion at any location, particularly where houses and other property may be involved, is a matter of grave concern. However, I am advised by the Commissioners of Public Works that there is no immediate threat to Ballcotton village.
