Vol. 366 No. 10

Written Answers. - Civil Legal Aid.

17.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on eligibility for legal aid.

I assume the Deputy is referring to eligibility for civil legal aid, as the question of eligibility for criminal legal aid is a matter for the courts.

The provisions governing eligibility for civil legal aid are contained in the scheme of civil legal aid and advice, the current terms of which were laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas in May 1983.

A general review of the means tests provisions in the scheme has been carried out in my Department and I am in the course of submitting proposals to the Government to revise the financial limits in the means test, including the eligibility limit.
