Vol. 366 No. 10

Written Answers. - Murder Investigation.

59.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to a media article (details supplied) which specifically stated that a violent death was not investigated by the Murder Squad; if he has had inquiries made about this death; if the matter was investigated by the Garda Síochána; if so, the results; if he has satisfied himself as to the report in the media; and if he is concerned that such leaks of what can be sensitive information can occur.

I have seen the article referred to. The Garda authorities have informed me that there is no question of a violent death having been left without investigation. It is assumed that the article in question refers to a death which took place on 11 May 1986. I am informed by the Garda authorities that this death was fully and promptly investigated by the appropriate members of the Garda Síochána and a person was charged in connection with the death on the same day.

I am naturally concerned at the publication of such inaccurate and alarmist reports which may cause people needless anxiety and concern. I have asked the Garda Commissioner to look into the matter to see whether there is a question of misleading indications having been given to the media.
