Vol. 367 No. 5

Written Answers. - Amalgamation of County Galway Schools.

155.

asked the Minister for Education when the Board of Works will be in a position to commence work on a toilet block at Saint Brendan's national school, Currandulla and Carrowbeg girls' national school, Currandulla, County Galway; if he is aware of the demand by the management committee for the completion of those works by September so that the amalgamation of both schools can proceed; and when the work will be completed.

156.

asked the Minister for Education if he will guarantee the employment of eight teachers over the next five years as part of the amalgamation of Saint Brendan's boys' national school, Currandulla and Carrowbeg girls' national school, Currandulla, County Galway; and if he will give a commitment that a toilet block which is proposed for each school will be completed by September as to allow the amalgamation to commence on that date.

I propose to take Question Nos. 155 and 156 together. The proposal is to amalgamate the boys' and girls' national schools in Currandulla. The appointment and retention of teachers in amalgamated schools are subject to regulations which are of general application. It would not be possible, therefore, to give the assurances in regard to staffing as sought by the Deputy.

With regard to toilet facilities my Department in May 1986 sanctioned grants towards the erection of toilet blocks in Saint Brendan's national school, Currandulla, County Galway, and in Carrowbeg girls' national school, Currandulla, County Galway. My Department has also arranged for its professional advisers to give the necessary advice to the authorities of the schools to enable them to have the work carried out. It is hoped that the two toilet blocks can be completed by September 1986.
