Vol. 368 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Ward Closures.

19.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the possible consequences and effects that hospital ward closures will have on waiting lists and admissions to hospitals under the Western Health Board.

The provision of hospital services in the Western Health Board area is a matter for that board. I understand from the board that as in 1985 a number of wards will be closed for periods during the current year. There may be some delay in the admission of some patients who are listed for elective admission. However, adequate arrangements will continue to be made to treat emergency cases.

It would seem that the closure of wards is seen as a new development. Far from that being the case, there is a long tradition of closing wards during holiday periods, especially the summer, when admissions are often at a much lower level than at other times of the year and staff are in any event on annual leave. Temporary closures also take place from time to time allow for maintenance and repairs to be carried out.
