asked the Minister for Agriculture the plans he has, if any, to promote alternative farming activities.

The search for alternative farm enterprises and for greater product development from existing agricultural output will be of considerable importance to agricultural and rural development in the future.

The promotion of alternative farming activities at farm level is part of ACOT's advisory role. ACOT are examining and will advise on the feasibility and viability of various alternative farm enterprises. In addition, they are co-operating with SFADCo in a pilot programme to promote farm based food processing industries such as cheeses, preserves, pâtés, etc.

An Foras Talúntais are examining the possibility of alternative uses of existing crop and livestock production through product development in association with commercial interests. In addition, they are examining the potential of some new crops for potential agricultural or industrial use.
