Vol. 369 No. 1

Written Answers. - Benefit-in-kind Taxation.

245.

asked the Minister for Finance the number and grades of the civil servants engaged in the assessing, administering and collection of benefit-in-kind taxation; and the annual cost involved.

In the Dublin general tax district the following heads of staff are engaged full time on benefit-in-kind taxation: 1 Inspector of Taxes; 4 Higher Tax Officers; 1 Tax Officer; 4 Departmental Clerical Assistants. The annual cost is £164,933.00.

Benefit-in-kind taxation is dealt with in provincial tax districts as part of the normal PAYE work allocation and no individual would be assigned full time to such assessments. For the purpose of evaluating the annual cost, countrywide, the figures for Dublin general tax district, which would have approximately 50 per cent of PAYE taxpayers, could be multiplied by two i.e. a total cost of £329,866.
