Vol. 369 No. 2

Written Answers. - Business Development Scheme.

90.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in relation to 1984 and 1985 (a) the location and the number of firms established under the business development scheme; (b) the number of full time employees in firms established under the scheme; and (c) the total amount of grants and interest subsidies to firms established under the scheme.

As regards (a) and (b), statistics are not available which would enable the precise details requested by the Deputy to be given. He may, however, be interested in the following information:

640 investors in 39 companies have, so far, qualified for income tax relief on investments of £1.53 million and £3.7 million respectively in the income tax years 1984-85 and 1985-86.

Since 6 April 1986 a further 18 companies have obtained approval for investments in excess of £1 million while another 86 companies are at various stages of progress involving potential investments of over £9 million.

As regards (c), the time available and the requirements of confidentiality (which preclude the transfer of information from the Revenue Commissioners) do not allow the amounts of grants and interest subsidies received by the firms concerned to be determined.
