Vol. 369 No. 3

Written Answers. - Mushroom Yields.

181.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the acute difficulties currently being experienced by mushroom growers who are exporting to the UK in particular (a) the poor quality of straw from 1985 which is affecting the poor yields of crops due to inadequate compost and (b) the high value of the Irish punt against sterling; in view of this if he will consider providing some financial assistance as given to other agricultural sectors; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The quality of straw from the 1985 harvest had some adverse effect on mushroom yields in the earlier part of the year but the position has improved again in recent months. There is no provision for aid to cover the effects of currency fluctuations and any national aid would, of course, be in breach of EC rules.
