Vol. 369 No. 3

Written Answers. - Allocation of Casual Trading Sites.

14.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that Dublin Corporation has designated special sites in the Henry Street area for a small number of traditional street traders but cannot allocate the sites because of a legal technicality (details supplied); and if he can examine the issues involved to see if he can assist in ending this deadlock.

Limerick East): I am aware that Dublin Corporation have recently designated casual trading sites in Coles Lane and Henry Place and that the sites have not yet been assigned to any traders.

There is no legal bar to the allocation of sites by the corporation, other than to persons who are statutorily debarred from holding a casual trading licence because they have two or more convictions under the Casual Trading Act. I do not have any power under the Act to lift or suspend this disqualification.

Under the Act, the local authority is responsible for the allocation of sites and the matter is therefore entirely in the hands of Dublin Corporation at this stage.
