Vol. 369 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Wexford Housing.

38.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware that the cutbacks of £630,000 for housing in County Wexford will create a disaster situation for the 1,000 or so people who are still on a housing list in the county; and if he will immediately make good the shortfall and provide moneys for new housing starts.

An allocation of £2,355,000 for local authority housing was notified to Wexford County Council on 31 July 1986. The county council have since requested an additional allocation of £630,000 to finance ongoing work on their programme and for new starts in 1986. I have these requests and similar ones from other authorities under examination at present and I will convey my decisions when that examination is completed.

Present indications are that the county council will complete over 120 houses this year, compared with 102 in 1985. Vacancies resulting from the £5,000 grant scheme have also increased — from about 16 in 1985 to about 36 in 1986.
