Vol. 369 No. 7

Written Answers. - Donegal Pier Crane Replacement.

43.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if any decision has been made on a request by the Donegal County Council in March 1985 to provide financial assistance for the replacement of the existing crane which is out of order and dangerous at Bunagee Pier, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Arising from the request referred to, my Department investigated whether the provision of a motorised crane at Bunagee Pier would be warranted in the fisheries interest and whether the location would be suitable and safe for the installation of such a crane. That investigation revealed that the head of the pier was in need of reconstruction and the Office of Public Works has been requested to submit a full engineering report on this work. When this report has been received, my Department will have an economic appraisal made to see whether the required expenditure can be justified in the fisheries interest. Meanwhile, the question of providing a crane must await the outcome of that appraisal.
