Vol. 369 No. 8

Written Answers. - Departmental Spending.

172.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the total spending of his Department in 1985; the amount of this spending for salaries, travel and subsistence; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The total gross amount expended on my Department's Vote in 1985 was £353.7 million. Of this expenditure £53.45 million was in respect of departmental pay and £7.5 million related to travel and subsistence payments to departmental staff.

I must point out, however, that the amount of voted moneys spent represents only part of the total amount spent by my Department. For 1985 this overall sum amounted to about £1,543 million including some £789 million of expenditure fully funded by the EC in respect of agricultural support measures and about £400 million borrowed by my Department for intervention purchases of beef, butter, skimmed milk powder and cereals.
