79.

asked the Minister for the Environment the sum to be provided by him to finance the damage caused by the June electric storms in west Cavan in line with the £228,000 announced by him for the adjacent area of County Leitrim.

80.

asked the Minister for the Environment the grant assistance which has been made available to meet the cost of storm damage in the Glangevlin-Dowra area of west Cavan; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 79 and 80 together.

On 20 October 1986, Cavan County Council were notified of a road grant allocation of £59,000 towards the cost of remedial works on public roads (including bridges) arising from the damage caused by flooding on 28-29 June 1986. This included £41,400 in relation to the Glangevlin-Dowra area.

In accordance with the practice adopted with local authorities generally, the amount of the grant in this case was determined on the basis of the full approved cost of the repair-replacement of bridges and of 75 per cent of the approved cost of road works on county roads. The approved cost was calculated by the Department on the basis of a submission made by the local authority.
