Vol. 369 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cervical Cancer Screening Programme.

23.

asked the Minister for Health when he proposes to introduce a national screening programme for cervical cancer; and the plans he has to improve the present provisions of this service.

I am well aware of the importance of adequate arrangements for screening for cervical cancer. I have encouraged a steering group representing all the relevant interests to prepare a detailed proposal for a pilot, population-based comprehensive screening programme. I expect to receive this proposal shortly. Pending the outcome of this proposal, I have made all necessary arrangements for the screening of women who have sought this service, including the supply of testing kits and the provision of necessary resources to the laboratory services involved.
