Vol. 369 No. 9

Written Answers. - Potato Imports.

84.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the recent high level of potato imports; the steps he can or will take with the representatives of the industry and the merchants to urge a greater utilisation of the Irish potato crop.

Under the EC rules there is free trade in potatoes within the Community. The increased imports recently have been attracted by the relatively good prices prevailing on the market here. My Department has held meetings with potato producers and merchants with a view to improving the co-ordination of the marketing of home-grown potatoes. Further efforts along these lines will continue in order to achieve greater domestic market co-ordination.
