Vol. 369 No. 9

Written Answers. - Repair of Courthouses.

85.

asked the Minister for Justice the amount of funds provided over the last five years for the repair of courthouses; and the courthouses which benefited.

I assume that the question does not refer to the Dublin city courts which are provided and maintained by the Office of Public Works.

All other court accommodation in the State is provided and maintained by local authorities as required by the Courthouses (Provision and Maintenance) Act, 1935. Each local authority makes its own arrangements to finance court repairs through its annual estimates. Major work is usually financed by borrowing and in recent years a number of local authorities have been allowed to borrow from the Local Loans Fund for that purpose. The total amount advanced from the fund in the past five years was £4,476,400* for the following courthouses: Tralee, Waterford, Carlow, Portlaoise, Bray, Cahir, Monaghan, Youghal, Ennis, Kilrush, Roscommon and Wicklow.

*This sum includes initial drawings for Tralee and Waterford courthouses which were made more than five years ago. Both projects, however, were completed and the bulk of the drawings made within the last five years.
