Vol. 369 No. 11

Written Answers. - Special Education.

181.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on policy of his Department for the post primary education of mildly mentally handicapped children.

In order to assist post primary schools in catering for the second level educational needs of pupils who have been catered for up to that stage in special classes in primary schools, my Department will authorise, to the extent of resources available, a teaching post in an appropriate post primary school in addition to the normal quota. Such additional resources are at present provided in 34 post primary schools. Consideration is being given at present to the provision of further additional posts.

Guidelines on curriculum and organisation for schools catering for such pupils have been drawn up and issued to the schools involved.
