Vol. 369 No. 11

Written Answers. - Limerick Worker Education and Training Centre.

184.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will approve funding for the worker education and training centre, located at the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick.

Over the past three years, AnCO's training advisory service has subvented the worker education and training centre as follows: 1984, £20,000; 1985, £20,000; 1986, £20,000. When the 1986 financial support was being made available, it was confirmed to the director of the centre that AnCO would not be in a position after that time to support the operations of the centre. In the absence of an independent review of the operation and aims of the centre in the context of adult education needs and worker education provision in particular, it is not possible, at this stage, to contemplate any continuous long term support for the centre.

Exchequer funding for trade union education and training in general is channelled through the Irish Congress of Trade Unions by my Department which provides an annual grant to Congress towards the cost of its education, training and advisory service. This year the grant amounts to £677,000
