Vol. 369 No. 12

Written Answers. - Construction of Recreational Facilities Grant Scheme.

77.

asked the Minister for Education if he will include the Ballinteer Community Youth Federation Centre in the 1987 programme for capital grants in view of the fact that there is great public demand for such facilities, and that the federation has already raised some funds, and have a strong professional organising committee.

My Department have no record of any formal application in respect of Ballinteer Community Youth Federation Centre under the existing scheme of grants for the provision of community facilities — the capital grant scheme for the construction of recreational facilities — which was introduced in 1985. Furthermore, the funds currently available to assist projects under this scheme are fully committed.

In view of the large number of applications under the scheme awaiting consideration by my Department and pending a decision in regard to the financial provision for this service — particularly in relation to the availability of funds for new projects — for the coming year, it was decided that no useful purpose would be served by accepting further grant applications at the present time. It is not open to me, therefore, to accede to the Deputy's request to give a commitment of capital grant assistance towards this particular development in respect of the coming year.
