Vol. 370 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Services.

181.

asked the Minister for Education in view of the learning difficulties faced by dyslexic children, if he will give financial assistance to such children attending special summer courses such as those organised by the Dyslexic Association of Ireland to ensure, in particular, that dyslexic children from low income families get the special help they need; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The educational needs of children with reading difficulties are being met through my Department's policy of strengthening the remedial services in schools by the assignment of extra teaching posts for this work as resources permit.

It is considered that, in general, the educational needs of children with reading difficulties are best met within the school system itself, with the help, where necessary and where resources permit, of special remedial schemes in schools. There are no funds available to my Department out of which assistance may be given towards the cost of summer courses for children.
