Vol. 370 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

42.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will arrange to renovate the old Garda Barracks at Monaghan town and make it available to the many Government Departments who are in totally inadequate accommodation.

With the exception of the offices which are occupied at present by the National Manpower Service, the Commissioners of Public Works consider that all other accommodation which they have provided for Government Departments in Monaghan town is adequate. Alternative premises have been acquired by the Commissioners for use by that service and the Commissioners do not propose to allocate funds from their limited budget to renovate the former Garda station at the present time.

43.

asked the Minister for Finance the estimated cost and actual cost of the building of the new Garda Barracks, Dungarvan, County Waterford; and when it is likely to open.

The original estimate was £311,000. The scheme executed is not directly comparable with that originally planned. Due to site restrictions the original proposal did not meet the Garda needs fully. The acquisition of extra ground subsequently enabled additional works to be executed to augment the planned scheme. The actual final cost figure for all works will not be available for some time but is estimated at approximately £400,000. This figure takes account of the additional works. It also includes the extra cost of wages and materials arising from inflation over the period of the contract and of an increase in VAT from 5 per cent to 10 per cent, both of which are allowable under the contract terms.

Building works have been completed and the gardaí are in course of occupying the building which should be open to the public in a matter of days.
