Vol. 370 No. 9

Written Answers. - Mackerel Quotas.

47.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if any efforts have been made to secure a mackerel quota east of 4º West; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is aware mackerel quotas for member states are determined annually by the EC Council of Ministers.

Consideration has been given to seeking a mackerel quota for Irish fishermen in the waters east of longitude 4º West but on balance it was decided not to proceed with the proposal as the price that would have to be paid in terms of granting corresponding access to mackerel stocks in Irish waters would not warrant it.

Question No. 48 resubmitted.
