Vol. 371 No. 5

Written Answers. - Gas Subsidy.

86.

asked the Minister for Energy if he will restore payment of the subsidy to the Dundalk Gas Company in view of the hardship being caused to both the company and the people of Dundalk; a town with a high unemployment rate; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The town gas subsidy was introduced in the budget of June 1975 to alleviate the adverse effects on consumers of steep increases in the price at naphtha. It was abolished by a Government decision on 23 December 1986 the price of the utilities base fuels having fallen considerably. I have no plans to reintroduce the subsidy.
