Vol. 372 No. 5

Written Answers. - Use of Public Buildings.

30.

asked the Minister for Education if she will make use of existing surplus public buildings, for example, Sir Patrick Dun's hospital, Jervis Street hospital or St. Laurence's, for additional technological education in Dublin, where children have half the participation rate in such educational facilities compared to children in other parts of the country, thereby saving on infrastructure and other costs; and whether she will consider using such buildings as hostels for students as appropriate.

These buildings are not available to me. In any event the financial allocations for capital development in the third-level sector are fully committed. One of the buildings mentioned has been sold and the others are in a very bad state of repair. Their organisation and adaptation as third level educational institutions would not necessarily represent an economic use of resources.
