Written Answers. - Customs Officers on Border Duty.

asked the Minister for Finance the numbers of custom officers and personnel deployed on Border duty; the net increase in personnel deployed on the Border since the new budget provisions were announced.

The number of customs staff deployed on Border duty at present is 207 on preventive duties and 114 on commercial imports and exports. Since the introduction on 1 April 1987 of restrictions on duty-free allowances for goods imported in baggage an extra eight to 12 heads of staff have been deployed temporarily on Border duty from other areas on an intermittent basis.
